Kuantan is the state capital of Pahang, situated on the bank of Sungai Kuantan, on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. It is the biggest town in the east coast and the economic development center for east coast.  The town is the gateway to the tourist resort of Teluk Cempedak and the Cherating Club Med.

History
According to the historical record, Kuantan had existed since early 1850s. It was earlier known as Kampung Teruntum and located on the Kuantan River estuary. The village was opened by a group of Malays from Kuantan, Sumatera. Thus is was later known as Kuantan.

Main Attraction
a. Teluk Cempedak/ Chempedek Beach
The main tourist attraction for Kuantan is beach at Teluk Cempedak. Of ourse there are other scenic beaches popular with vacationers in the vicinity of the town. We have Batu Hitam (literally Black Rock), Balok, Chenor, Pantai Sepat, Beserah, and the famous Cherating. Cherating is well known for its surfing, Club Med. A few kilometers away from Cherating is Pulau Ular (Snake Island). Many tourist, both local and overseas, are attracted to the beautiful beaches  near Kuantan.

b. Waterfalls
If you like the fresh water variation to cool yourself, then Kuantan has a number of attractive waterfalls in its tourist list. The most well-known is the Sungai Pandan Water Fall. Two other waterfalls are the Sungai Berkelah Waterfall and the Jerangkang Waterfall.

c. Teruntum Zoo
 If you like to take a morning stroll, there are three parks within the city. These are the Gelora Park, Teruntum Mini Zoo and Agriculture Park at Indera Mahkota. A small park located in front of the Hospital is named the Esplanade Park. You can also spend some time and go on a river cruise from the small jetty. To remind yourself of your visit, you can get handicrafts products, batik and other gifts.

d. Mining Museum
The Tin Museum in the former mining town of Sungai Lembing, situated about 40 km northwest of Kuantan. During the heyday of mining days, the town was among the richest town in Malaya and the mine stood among the largest and deepest in the world. The total tunnel length is 322 km, with a depth of between 610 m and 700 m. Now the mine is close and many of the residents had moved away.

Getting To Kuantan
There are basically three ways to get to Kuantan:
            -By Air
            - By Train
            - By Road

By Air.
From Kuala Lumpur  to Kuantan by MAS
         Singapore to Kuantan by  Firefly

By Train
Kuantan is not served by the train route, the nearest train station is Mentakab, which is about 100 km from Kuantan. So if you arrive by train either from the North, i.e Kota Bharu or south, i,e Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, then you have to stop at Mentakab.

Kuantan will take about 1.5 hours.

By Road
Going by road is the most common mode of transport to Kuantan. It is connected by the tolled highway to Kuala Lumpur. The drive from Kuala Lumpur will take 3.5 hours.
