Sunday Market Temerloh

Sunday market is the traditional direct marketing concept in Malaysia. Its history dated back to the days prior to the coming of the British. A fix day of the week is designated as the market day, in Temerloh is Sunday and the nearby towns or villages, it can be other days.

If it is on sunday it is known as pekan Ahad, Pekan can be translated as small town or market and Ahad is Sunday, the first day of the week for traditional Malay.

If you have the opportunity then, come over to see how the local do the trading. You can see the two groups of traders, the simple villagers who sell things they produced on their own and the middle men, who make their living by by becoming the middle men.

I have a video to give a clearer description:

Temerloh

Temerloh is a small town Pahang, located at the congruent of Sungai Pahang and Sungai Semantan, about 120 km from Kuala Lumpur. It takes about 2 hour drive from the capital. It is also a district with about 1 million population.

The town was earlier know as Kuala Semantan before the name was changed to Temerloh. It is a quite town, and become lively every Sunday with the weekly market.

This is my second home town. and I will normally go to the town every month.

Attraction of Temerloh
a. For a local Malaysian, I would think there is not much tourist attractions as per see. Many people travel to the town for their own personal reasons, such as visiting family and relative, assignments and work or business.

Another area which I group it under jobs and works is the political activities. The by elections normally will attract large crowds and large $$ especially from the ruling party. Some time I wonder where the money comes from. There will be one by-election following the death of a BN representatives.

b. For foreign tourist, Temerloh is the site of the elephant sanctuary. I had written a posting on this.

Sharing My Trip Picture of Temerloh

Highway Toll Is Becoming a Routine In Malaysia,
Pix- Toll Booth East-West Highway Near Bentong Pahang
I decided to take a day leisure drive to the town of Temerloh in Pahang. It is not a tourist spot except for the elephant santuary at The Kuala Gandah Elephant Santuary. It was a smooth, after you get out of the Kuala Lumpur traffic jam. You take the highway towards the east coast, the road sign can vary, Genting, Bentong, Temerloh or Kuantan.

The first toll you will come across will be in Gombak, the entrance to the highway. About a kilometer after the toll, you can see the Islamic International University on the right with it rich Moorish architecture. Then there the BP service station beside the highway. I usually stop for a cup of coffee, either at the Indian restaurant and the cafe.

Further down, about five km, you will notice, a collection of houses, a and ingenious malaysian on your right. This is the resettlement program for the aborigines. Like other countries, (Australian and New Zealand) they find it hard to take the quantum leap into 21 century. I always wanted to see how they live, but have not make the effort yet. I would love to write a blog on the aborigines.

Then about twenty minutes from the toll, you will see the exit to Genting. A resort designed for gamblers. It is among the biggest casino in South East Asia and a major contributor to Pahang's annual revenue. Pass the tunnel, you are in Pahang.

Exist To Berjaya Hill Cool Resort - Enjoying Nature

Berjaya Hill's exist is only 40 minutes from Kuala Kumpur. The climbing drive will take another 15 minutes before you reach the resort. At 1,000 meters above sea-level, the resort, formerly known as Bukit Tinggi, is the latest in Pahang.
It was built based on the cultural attractions. You would have the Japanese Garden, French-themed resort and others.

.
Landmark of Temerloh - Big Sign Across Pahang River
The hallmark as viewed across the bank, from the town of Temerloh. Pahang River is the longest in Peninsular Malaysia, running from Kuala Tahan to Pekan. It used to be the lifeline of the region. In the early days, the state was divided by the areas served by the rivers. In Pahang for example, one chief was in charge of Jelai and all the tributaries. He is named as 'Orang Kaya Datuk Indra Mahkota Perba Jelai'. Similarly, one was in charge of Semantan, The Orang Kaya Semantan. He was well known as the person that was against the occupation of British. You may have heart the stories of Datuk Bahaman.

The picture above- The river equipped with jetty for boats to pick up the passengers and goods. The roles of the river as the mean of transportation is drastically reduced.

Congruence of Two Rivers, River Semantan and River Pahang

Strolling under the shades of the trees and enjoying the beautiful view of Pahang River. The river is the site for the annual rafting festival. Over 20 odd rafts made from the local bamboos will be drifting down the river towards the town of Pekan. Pekan actually literally mean town.

Beautiful Mosque in Temerloh
The mosque is among the few original building, situated in the old section of the town. The commercial district had shifted to the new location about 2 km away. Majority of the shops in the old area are having problem to get customers.
The mosque is built at the previously strategic location, behind it is the Pahang River, used to be the mean of transport 50 years ago.

Temerloh is Expanding
About 4 km before you reach the town, you can see sign of expansion with new building cropping up.
Many anticipate it will be physically joined to the nearby town of Mentakab.

The Fate Of Temerloh Old Town
The development had shifted. The new banks are at the new town. The Bus station had changed for the second time.

The old town is left without much attraction. There is no reason why people want to go to the old town. The shops became deserted.
