Pahang to develop Chereh Dam as recreational spot
Pahang State Secretary Datuk Muhammad Safian Ismail said the dam would be opened to the public once the construction of new tourism infrastructure was completed.
He added illegal fishing activities had been carried out in the dam before. he said such activities could be regulated under state supervision.
“The dam has a number of fish species including sebarau, kelah, andbaung which are popular with fishing enthusiasts. But we need to control the fishing activity or else the number of fish in the dam will be depleted,” he said after releasing some 475 million litres of water from the dam yesterday.
The Chereh dam, located 20km from Sungai Lembing, supplies water to consumers in the Kuantan district.
Muhammad Safian said the dam would be included in the Sungai Lembing tourist destination package. The area has a disused tin mine which is popular with local and foreign tourists alike.
He added the surrounding areas also had the picturesque Pelangi waterfalls, Gunung Tapis mountain, scenic Bukit Panaroma and hot springs.
Muhammad Safian said a fishing carnival would be held next year after road upgrading works to the site were completed.
A second access route to Sungai Lembing would also be constructed from Jerantut, he added.
On another matter, Muhammad Safian said the release of 475 million litres of water from the dam was done to prevent the dam overflowing due to the coming monsoon season.
He said that the dam’s water level would be reduced from 74m to 70m over the next two months during the rainy period, in which the heavy rainfall was expected to persist from August to December.
