Janda Baik, Escape the hassle of city living

Janda Baik, is a small traditional village situated in the hilly surroundings in Pahang. Due to its vicinity to the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, it became a weekend retreat for the city dwellers to unwind and to get away from hectic life. It is situated in Pahang, about 40 minute drive. It mains attraction is its natural beauty, with the clear flowing streams, waterfalls and jungle trekking. Because of it high attitude, the temperature is cooler, especially at night and in the early morning.

The name Janda Baik, means good widow. How exactly it gets its name is unknownot , eans from the busy Kuala Lumpur. How exactly it get its name is unknown. It was at one time, announced to be annexed by Kuala Lumpur, causing a wild rush for the property buyers, only to be frustrated by another change of the decision. This indirectly had caused a positive effect to the unknown village, the landowners had developed the tourist attractions, complete with resorts and holiday chalets.

There is only one way to get there, that is by by road. There is no direct bus, so travelers will have to get a taxi or drive their own car. Take the highway to Genting and Pahang. After about 20 minutes drive, you will reach the tunnel, and right after the tunnel take the right turn towards Janda Baik.

Whatever you plan to do at Janda Baik, please do not miss the swimming in the stream. The water may not be deep, but you can build a dam, and it is worth the effort. The stones and pebbles are readily available. It is fun, i promise but requires a lot of energy. Swimming could be done at all parts of Kampung Janda Baik, the one at Taman Hana Wadi Hussein is of courts on private property but there are parts accessible to the public.

Try this, you will enjoy, the serenity and calmness of the nature. Sometimes you can also be able see wild monkeys looking for foods in the trees at the river banks.

The tranquility, cool breeze, warm friendly citizens of Janda Baik is somehow touching us. As a backpackers, we made our most possible ways to learn, absorb, understand the roots of the culture in Malaysia particularly in Janda Baik and trying to understand the challenge face by this beautiful place.

We were very fortunate to meet some friendly team when they were on the task taking various different samples of water from different streams/rivers in Janda Baik for their further analysis.

The fondest memory about Janda Baik is obviously the existing natural rainforest and clear streams that run across it not to mentioned the beautiful Malay architecture wooden village houses that shape the character of Janda Baik. Indeed this is the resources of Janda Baik, without this resources of the combination of the above factors, Janda Baik will lost it character and touch.

Efforts has to be increased to sustain and protect these resources of Janda Baik. We trekked further to withness the impact of illegal hill farming (ginger) and de-forestration process by alien chinese farmers that destroy the beautiful rainforest, its eco-system. It had caused tremendous erosion and make it more susceptible to flash flood and landslip.

Sometime we wonder where are the person in authority, both from the federal the Pahang State. Hopefully the short term gains are not being exchanged for the long term survival. I want to believe that these people know their roles and responsibility.
Their works will ensure Pahang remains as a tourist destination.
